Salmon Rivers do not all have the same Season but most Salmon Fishing is done between early February and the end of September. Fishing is let mainly by the beat on a weekly basis (excluding Sundays) with a beat taking between 2 and 7 rods but day rods, or multiples thereof, can be available. Most beats will have a resident ghillie (whose services will be included in the rent) and the larger Rivers a fishing hut and boats if appropriate. Tackle can be hired if necessary and the rental for both the sport and accommodation (if included) is normally paid in advance.

A tenancy of salmon fishing will usually include the right to catch Sea trout and Brown Trout. Otherwise Brown Trout fishing in hill lochs is often included in a shooting and or stalking let on Highland Estates.
